Delayed presence : a bug in the global system
Presence at a distance is linked to the fluidity generated by ICTs. However, when looked at more closely, this fluidity is not so frictionless. In order to illustrate this, I will introduce a “typology of migrants calls”, and analyses of conversations which are relevant to the question of long-distance localisation and of how to dwell at a distance. I will show how the free flow of information and communication, in order to take place, needs to overcome a series of (socio-technical) obstacles which I suggest can be called delays.
